GEO vs SEO:
What's the difference?
SEO gets you ranked on Google. GEO gets you recommended inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. In 2026, both matter — and they require completely different strategies.
The one-line answer: SEO determines where you rank when someone searches Google. GEO determines whether you get recommended when someone asks an AI. Same customer — completely different algorithm.
What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your website rank higher on Google and Bing. When someone types a query, search engines return a list of links ordered by relevance and authority. SEO determines how high your page appears in that list.
SEO is driven by backlinks (who links to you), on-page signals (keywords, structure, speed), and domain authority built over time. It takes 3–6 months to see meaningful results from new content.
What is GEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your brand appear in AI-generated answers. When someone asks ChatGPT “what's the best CRM for a startup?” — GEO determines whether your brand is mentioned in the response.
AI models learn from training data and real-time web sources. They recommend brands that have strong third-party presence: G2 reviews, Reddit discussions, Wikipedia articles, Capterra listings, and consistent entity descriptions across the web.
Unlike SEO, GEO results can move in 30–60 days with the right citation strategy. You can check your GEO score free at GEOscore.
GEO vs SEO: side-by-side comparison
The two strategies differ across every dimension — from what they optimise to how they're measured.
| Dimension | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank on Google search results | Get recommended inside AI answers |
| Target platform | Google, Bing, Yahoo | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity |
| Primary signal | Backlinks + on-page content | Third-party citations + entity clarity |
| Result format | Blue link on a results page | Brand mentioned in a direct AI answer |
| User action | User clicks a link and visits your site | User reads AI recommendation and acts |
| Key platforms to win | Your website, Google Business Profile | G2, Reddit, Wikipedia, Capterra, LinkedIn |
| Content format | Keywords, meta tags, structured headers | Entity descriptions, Q&A format, JSON-LD |
| Measurement | Rankings, organic traffic, impressions | GEO score, AI mention frequency, brand recall |
| Time to impact | 3–6 months for new content | 30–60 days with the right citation strategy |
Can you rank #1 on Google and still fail GEO?
Yes — and this is the most important thing to understand. Google's algorithm and AI models use fundamentally different signals.
A brand with zero G2 reviews, no Reddit presence, and no Wikipedia article can rank #1 on Google for their target keyword through backlinks and content. But ChatGPT will never recommend them because AI models require external social proof — not just web authority.
Conversely, a brand with a strong G2 profile, active Reddit community, and consistent entity descriptions can score 80+/100 on GEO while ranking on page 3 of Google. The two systems are independent.
What does overlap between GEO and SEO?
✓ High-quality content
Both Google and AI models reward factual, well-structured content with clear definitions and direct answers.
✓ Structured data (JSON-LD)
Schema markup helps Google understand your pages and helps AI models identify your brand entity.
✓ Page speed
A fast website signals quality to Google crawlers and ensures AI scrapers can access your content fully.
✓ Consistent brand messaging
Clear, repeated entity descriptions help both Google's knowledge graph and AI model training data.
✓ Authoritative external links
Links from high-authority sites signal trust to Google. The same sites (G2, Wikipedia) train AI models.
✓ Q&A content format
Both Google (featured snippets) and AI prefer content structured as direct question-and-answer pairs.
Frequently asked questions
Does good SEO automatically mean good GEO?
No. You can rank #1 on Google and score 0 on GEO. They use different algorithms and different trust signals. SEO needs backlinks and on-page content. GEO needs third-party citations on platforms AI models trust.
Should I do GEO or SEO first?
Both in parallel, but if you're early-stage, GEO moves faster. A focused GEO campaign (G2 listing, Reddit presence, structured data) can show score improvements in 30–60 days. Meaningful SEO gains typically take 3–6 months minimum.
What is a GEO score?
A GEO score (0–100) measures how visible and recommended your brand is across AI platforms. It's calculated by running 20+ query variations across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. The average brand scores 29/100. You can check your score free at GEOscore.
Is GEO the same as AEO?
No. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) focuses on getting your content into direct answers — featured snippets and voice search. GEO focuses on getting your brand recommended inside conversational AI responses. AEO is about content structure; GEO is about brand authority signals.
